Synopsis

The Romanian edition of the Authoritarian Populism Index, Timbro's annual measurement of support for authoritarian populist parties across Europe, published with the EPICENTER network.

The 2024 edition finds that 26.9% of Europeans vote for authoritarian populist parties of the left or the right, a historically high share though close to the level reached in 2019. Concern over immigration has lifted support for the authoritarian right, while the radical left continues its steady decline. Support is strongest in Hungary, Italy, France, Greece and Poland, and weakest in Malta, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Luxembourg and Croatia.

Populist parties hold more Eurosceptic positions than the mainstream, though fewer of them now argue for leaving the European Union outright. Romania is among the eight European countries in which populist or authoritarian parties take part in government.
