Synopsis

Seventeen years after Romania joined the European Union, this study weighs what membership has delivered and what now puts it at risk. Romania is still among the poorest member states, yet its economy has become markedly more complex and more closely tied to its European partners. At the same time, political forces hostile to the Union are gaining ground, fed by political frustration and economic worries.

The authors set out an agenda for the single market's next thirty years: completing Romania's and Bulgaria's entry into Schengen by land, removing the rules that weigh on transport companies from Central and Eastern Europe, protecting the collaborative economy from incumbents who try to block it, keeping Romania's competitive market for medical and dental services open, and resisting new occupational licences while ending the monopoly of professional associations.

The study was launched on 8 April 2024 at the Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest.
